Says Richard Ashton, Director of IWM Duxford, “I am absolutely delighted that we have won the Large Visitor Attraction of the Year Award.  We are constantly striving to enhance the visitor experience at Duxford as well as showcase, to the best of our ability, the wonderful and amazing collection in our care.  To be recognised in this way for our commitment is a great honour and a testament to the hard work and dedication of my team - the staff, volunteers and partners at Duxford who do so much to make any visit to the Museum a memorable and enjoyable experience.”

30 Board of Governors Meet at NASM's Mutual Concerns

capitol_cherrytree.jpgThe Aviation Heritage Group’s Board of Governors met for its annual meeting in Washington this April.  The Board welcomed returning members Bob Ellis (Executive Director, Kalamazoo Air Zoo), Chris Knapp  (Conservation Manager, Imperial War Museum Duxford, UK), Sven Scheiderbauer (Director, National Norwegian Aviation Museum), Dee Hanson (Executive Director, Alaska Airmen’s Association) and Jeff Cannon (Vice President, HSMM - Hayes, Seay, Mattern, Mattern) back to the board as well as new members Cathy Allen (Director, College Park Aviation Museum) and Kip Kirkland (Executive Director, Poplar Grove Vintage Wings & Wheels Museum), all of whom have been elected to the board for a new two-year term ending at the annual general meeting in 2010.

The President reviewed AHG's past year, and asked for any comments from the board. The suggestion was made that now that we have a full working BOG that we start to fill out the committee assignments necessary to move the work of the organization along. The president will meet with the executive committee and start recruiting members for the various committee assignments thought necessary by the Board at this time.

Members also talked about having an AHG presentation as part of Mutual Concerns next year.  Members were asked to come up with some suggestion as to what might be the topic(s) of such a session.  There was also discussion of having smaller, regional sessions on a single topic of interest to members during the year at locations where we have not had Mutual Concerns meetings, in order to broaden the outreach of AHG for our members’ benefit. Some suggestions for topics were discussed, and the President said he would ask the executive board to determine if we are in a position to hold such a Seminar at this stage in the organization’s development.

ahg_mutalconcerns2008_sm.jpgAll agreed that the group was moving ahead in the right direction and that the web site was beginning to prove its value. Ms. Dahm, AHG Technical Coordinator, was present to answer any website-related questions from the board.  It was decided that she, Ben Kristy and Bill Sheridan are an ad-hoc committee that responds to member’s questions and problems on the web site.  She handles technical questions about the site and Ben and Bill address content and other issues.  She said this has worked well so far and both Ben and Bill indicated they would continue to work with Casey in this capacity. The board adjourned, with the next meeting scheduled for later this year.

Have you renewed your membership?  If so, thank you, and please log on to join the discussions! If not, please take a moment to renew by logging at the bottom left of this page, using your e-mail account on file with AHG. If your membership has already expired, please drop us a line at billing@aviationheritagegroup.org and we can send out an electronic invoice for immediate renewal!

Third Annual Meeting Held in Washington, D.C.

Washington Monument
AHG held its third AGM at the start of the Mutual Concerns conference in Washington D.C. on April 5th. The meeting was highlighted by the election of two new members of the Board of Governors, Cathy Allen, who represents the College Park Aviation Museum, and Kip Kirkland of the Poplar Grove Vintage Wings & Wheels Museum.

Members were also able to participate in a live online demonstration of our new web site capabilities. Casey Dahm, AHG Technical Coordinator was on hand to show off the new features of the site and was able to walk the members through the new members’ only sections. She also explained the ease with which members could go online to update their membership information. Several suggestions were made by the members as to how we could increase the utility of the site. Ms. Dahm then explained how the application provider is constantly upgrading the service, and some of the features that members had suggested were being worked on and should be available in the near future!  The members present expressed their appreciation for the work Ms. Dahm has done and were impressed with the functionality of the new web site.

Thank you to all the members that attended! For those that didn't, we urge you to log in, look around, post in the forums, and make the most of your membership!
